The Messengers of Allah

Translated by : A.J. Kassem

The Messengers of Allah are people that were given revelation and the responsibility to live according to it and teach their people to do the same.  They were not angels or supernatural beings.  They were simply human beings like us that ate food and lived amongst the people.  They were subject to the same human limitations as we all are, such as fatigue, sickness, and death.

{قَالَتْ لَهُمْ رُسُلُهُمْ إِنْ نَحْنُ إِلَّا بَشَرٌ مِثْلُكُمْ وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ يَمُنُّ عَلَى مَنْ يَشَاءُ مِنْ عِبَادِهِ}

{Their messengers said to them, “We are only people like you, however Allah gives to whomever He wills from His servants”} (The Quran 14:11}

Allah, the One True God, has sent revelation to His messengers in different forms.  Sometimes Allah sent down angels to his human messengers to convey Allah’s speech.  The angels may have appeared in their true forms or in the shape of a human. Sometimes, Allah spoke to a messenger directly, but from behind a partition.  Revelation also came to messengers in the form of divine inspiration and in their dreams.
{وَمَا كَانَ لِبَشَرٍ أَنْ يُكَلِّمَهُ اللَّهُ إِلَّا وَحْيًا أَوْ مِنْ وَرَاءِ حِجَابٍ أَوْ يُرْسِلَ رَسُولًا فَيُوحِيَ بِإِذْنِهِ مَا يَشَاءُ إِنَّهُ عَلِيٌّ حَكِيمٌ}

{And it is not for any person that Allah speaks to him directly, except from behind a partition or He sends a messenger (from the angels) that reveals by His permission what He wills.  Indeed, He is Most High, Most Wise.} (The Quran, 42:51)

The main job of the messengers was to call people to the worship of Allah, alone, without associating any partners with Him, and to warn people against worshipping anything other than Allah from His creations, such as people, demons, angels, rocks, trees, and heavenly bodies.

}وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ قَبْلِكَ مِنْ رَسُولٍ إِلَّا نُوحِي إِلَيْهِ أَنَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا أَنَا فَاعْبُدُونِ{

{And We have not sent any messenger before you except that We revealed to him that there is no god worthy of worship except for ME, so worship ME} (The Quran, 21:25)

Allah sent all of His messengers with good tidings of paradise for those who worship Him alone in the ways that he legislated such as sincere acts of prayer, charity, fasting, kindness to parents, keeping good family relations and character.
} وَبَشِّرِ الَّذِين آمَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ الصَّالِحَاتِ أَنَّ لَهُمْ جَنَّاتٍ تَجْرِي مِن تَحْتِهَا الأَنْهَارُ{

{And give good tidings to the people who believe and do good deeds that they will have gardens in paradise under which rivers flow} (The Quran 2:25)

Allah has also sent His messengers to give their people clear warnings of a severe punishment if they persist in evil ways, so that anyone who has brought the wrath of Allah on him or herself has no excuse that they were not warned.  On Judgement Day, these messengers will be witness that they carried out their duties to convey their divine messages and the people were warned.  Examples of major sins that are associated with severe punishments in the hereafter are choosing disbelief in Allah and His messengers after realizing the truth, killing people unjustly, disobedience to parents, adultery, and usury.

}رُسُلًا مُبَشِّرِينَ وَمُنْذِرِينَ لِئَلَّا يَكُونَ لِلنَّاسِ عَلَى اللَّهِ حُجَّةٌ بَعْدَ الرُّسُلِ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ عَزِيزًا حَكِيمًا{

{(He sent) Messengers as givers of good tidings and warners so that people will not have any excuse with Allah after the messengers (came to them), and Allah is All-Mighty and All-Wise} (The Quran 4:165)

Therefore, it is incumbent upon all people and obligatory for them to obey the Messenger of Allah in all that he commands and refrain from all that he prohibits as soon as they realize the truth of his message.

}وَمَا أَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ رَسُولٍ إِلَّا لِيُطَاعَ بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ{

{And We have not sent any of the messengers except for him to be obeyed, by the permission of Allah} (The Quran 4:64)

}وَمَا آتَاكُمُ الرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ وَمَا نَهَاكُمْ عَنْهُ فَانْتَهُوا{

{And whatever the Messenger has commanded you to do, do it, and whatever he has forbidden you from, cease} (The Quran 59:7)

Since the Messengers of Allah all called their people to believe in matters of the unseen, such as the Creators existence, Judgement Day, Heaven and Hell, angels and devils, etc…, they were all given definitive proofs of the truth of their message.  Their proofs were the most appropriate for the people that they were sent to.  For example, Moses was given something greater than magic in his staff, and Jesus was given something greater than medicine in his healing and resurrecting of people, and the Prophet Mohammad was given something greater than the poetry that the Arabs were masters of, and that is the Noble Quran.

}فَإِنْ كَذَّبُوكَ فَقَدْ كُذِّبَ رُسُلٌ مِنْ قَبْلِكَ جَاءُوا بِالْبَيِّنَاتِ وَالزُّبُرِ وَالْكِتَابِ الْمُنِير{

{And, if they disbelieve in you, then (know) that messengers before you were also disbelieved in (even though) they came with clear proofs, ordinances, and a scripture full of light.} (the Quran 3:184)

Although all messengers were tasked with conveying what was revealed to them, the One that sent them were responsible for guiding people’s hearts towards accepting their messages.  Many people did not answer the call of the messengers and accused them of many falsities, such as being liars, magicians or under spells, poets, and crazy.

}وَكَمْ أَرْسَلْنَا مِنْ نَبِيٍّ فِي الْأَوَّلِينَ. وَمَا يَأْتِيهِمْ مِنْ نَبِيٍّ إِلَّا كَانُوا بِهِ يَسْتَهْزِئُونَ{

{And how many a prophet we sent to the people of the past.  And there never came a prophet to them except that they ridiculed him} (The Quran 43:6-7}

Anyone who actively denies the messengers and what they brought and fights against them will ultimately be defeated. Even if the disbelievers went as far as killing a messenger, Allah would send other messengers after them and personally take revenge for crimes against His messengers.

}كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَأَغْلِبَنَّ أَنَا وَرُسُلِي إِنَّ اللَّهَ قَوِيٌّ عَزِيزٌ{

{Allah has written, “I will be victorious, both Me and My messengers”. Indeed, Allah is Strong and Powerful} (The Quran, 58:24)

}إِنَّا لَنَنْصُرُ رُسُلَنَا وَالَّذِينَ آَمَنُوا فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَيَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْأَشْهَادُ{

{Indeed, We come to the aid of Our messengers and the believers in this life and the Day that the witnesses will rise} (The Quran 40:51)

In conclusion, it is incumbent upon every conscious adult to realize the truth of the messages that all the Messengers of Allah brought, believe in them, and obey them.  Belief in all of them from the beginning of time to the last prophet and messenger, Mohammad, peace be upon him, is obligatory for everyone who their messages have reached.

}إِنَّ الَّذِينَ يَكْفُرُونَ بِاللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهِ وَيُرِيدُونَ أَنْ يُفَرِّقُوا بَيْنَ اللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهِ وَيَقُولُونَ نُؤْمِنُ بِبَعْضٍ وَنَكْفُرُ بِبَعْضٍ وَيُرِيدُونَ أَنْ يَتَّخِذُوا بَيْنَ ذَلِكَ سَبِيلًا أُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْكَافِرُونَ حَقًّا وَأَعْتَدْنَا لِلْكَافِرِينَ عَذَابًا مُهِينًا وَالَّذِينَ آَمَنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهِ وَلَمْ يُفَرِّقُوا بَيْنَ أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ أُولَئِكَ سَوْفَ يُؤْتِيهِمْ أُجُورَهُمْ وَكَانَ اللَّهُ غَفُورًا رَحِيمًا{

Indeed, those who disbelieve in Allah and His messengers and wish to discriminate between Allah and His messengers and say, "We believe in some and disbelieve in others," and wish to adopt a way in between - Those are the disbelievers, truly. And We have prepared for the disbelievers a humiliating punishment. But they who believe in Allah and His messengers and do not discriminate between any of them - to those He is going to give their rewards. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful. (The Quran, 4:150-152)
