Muslims believe that the Holy Qur'an is God's speech. They feel its influence on their life and believe that the Qur'an suits all generations for all time, as it was sent down for everyone. Most of them feel that they are not doing what they should do to describe and explain the Qur'an thoroughly, although they have made some efforts to do so. They believe that the Qur'an is Prophet Mohammad's greatest and ever-lasting miracle. Although the Prophet Mohammad was illiterate, meaning he couldn't read or write, he came with a book of greatness with many miraculous aspects. Readers of the Holy Qur'an will be astonished by its variety of topics and rhetorical methods of presenting stories as well as its beautiful descriptions of the universe with its skies and planets, the earth and creatures on it, the seas and everything that lives in them and the sky and what flies in it. They will also be surprised by its precise description of the human body and mind through all stages of life. All of these things and more make the Qur'an a distinctive book. It is a miracle that it came through an Arabian man who lived in a desert environment looking after sheep between its mountains, and never left Makkah, except for only two times to Al-Sham, once with his uncle Abu-Taleb when he was a little boy, and another time for trade when he was in his twenties. His companions knew him very well and confirmed that he never met with or learned from any scholar of any religion. When Buhayrah, the Christian Monk saw him, he knew that Mohammad was the prophet mentioned in the Bible from his characteristics and appearance. He told Mohammad's family about this and warned them to protect him.
God described the accusations against him in the Holy Qur'an in Surah Al-Nahl
And indeed, we know that they (polytheists and pagans) say: "It is only a human being who teaches him (Mohammad)" The tongue of the man they refer to is foreign, while this (the Qur'an) is a clear Arabic tongue).
In this verse, God exposes the plot of the deniers of the Quran by telling us that the language of the man they claim taught Mohammad was not Arabic, while the language of the Quran is clear Arabic. Furthermore, if a man like Mohammad came with a book of his own , it would have been about Arabian social life in the villages, the Bedouins and what concerned the Arabian man at that time such as goats, camels, horses, Arabian tribes and their problems of shortages of water and other economic and political issues. However, when we read the Qur'an, we find that it is a miraculous book in its eloquence, explanation and inclusiveness of all life aspects. It offers the best guidance for all aspects of social and personal life and has political and economical laws and regulations. It is full of natural, medical and astronomical knowledge, historical and geographical information and contains marvelous rhetorical and eloquent language in an easy, flexible style that is suitable for all circumstances of location and time with all possible changes and developments.
The Quran was revealed over a period of twenty three years as it was coming down from God. The Quran is preserved and safe from contradictions. Its parts support and prove each other as they were sent down according to people's life events occurring at a time. God challenged the Arabs and Qurayish tribe to come up with something similar to the Qur'an or even a chapter or a verse. It has now been over fourteen centuries and nobody has come with that. Furthermore, they will never do so until the day of resurrection, so the challenge still exists for all humans and jinns. God says:
Say: " If the mankind and the jinn were together to invent(produce) the like of this Qur'an, they could not invent(produce) the like thereof, even if they helped one another." Al-Isra 88
Loving the Qur'an, believing in it and getting influenced by it were not only for the Prophet Mohammad’s time, but continued even after his death. People from all nations, even non-Arabs, accepted and believed in it. As a matter of fact, non-Arab Muslims today are more numerous than Arabs. It is not logical that a book from a human gets continuous acceptance from all nations. All proofs and evidences indicate that the Qur'an is God's speech (words) and was not made up by the Prophet Mohammad. Here are some more proofs:
If it was from the Prophet Mohammad , it would not contain a threat and warning directed to himself. God says:
And if he had forged a false saying concerning Us(God), We surely would have seized him by his right hand, And then We certainly would have cut off his life artery, And none of you could have withheld Us from punishing him. Al-Haqqah 44-47
And thus have We sent it (the Qur'an) down to be a judgement of authority in Arabic. Were you (Mohammad) to follow their (vain) desires after the knowledge which has come to you, then you will not have any protector or defender against God. So would prophet Mohammad leave this verse to be read and look at this strong warning God says: ( And Verily, they were about to tempt you away from that which We have revealed to you (Qur'an) to fabricate something other than it against Us, and then they would certainly have taken you an intimate friend! And had We not made you stand firm, you would nearly have inclined to them a little. In that case We would have made you taste a double portion of (punishment) in this life and a double portion (of punishment) after death. And then you would have found none to help you against Us. Al-Isra 73-75
Furthermore God warns the Prophet not to be lazy in conveying God's message. God says:
"O Messenger(Mohammad), proclaim (the message) which has been sent down to you from your Lord. And if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. God will protect you from mankind. Verily, God guides not the people who disbelieve in Him."Al-Ma'edah 67
Also, if the Qur'an was from Mohammad, how could he include verses that blame him for some of his actions, as in Surah Abasa where God says:
The Prophet frowned and turned away. Because there came to him the blind man (Abdullah Ibn-Omm-Maktoom), who came to the prophet while he was preaching to one or some of Quraish tribe chiefs. And how can you know that he might become pure (from sins). Or he might receive admonition, and the admonition might benefit him.
The Qur'an also mentions the intention the prophet had hidden from the people of his marrying Zaynab bin Jahsh. God says:
"And (remember) when you said to whom (the Prophet's servant, zaid bin Harithah) God has bestowed Grace (by guiding to Islam) and you have done favor to him ( by manumitting him) when you said to him" keep your wife to yourself , and fear God," But you did hide in yourself what has God already made known to you that He will give her to you in marriage) that which God will make manifest, you did fear people ( their saying that Mohammad married the divorced wife of his manumitted slave) whereas God had a better right that you should fear Him. So, when Zaid had accomplished his desire from her( i.e divorced her), We gave her to you in marriage, so that (in future) there may be no difficulty to the believers in respect of ( the marriage of) the wives of their adopted sons when the latter have no desire to keep them (i.e. they have divorced them). And God's Command must be obeyed. "Al-Ahzab 37
With all of these warnings, the Quran also mentions the Prophet's duties and the importance of the religion he was sent with to convey. It assures the Prophet's humanitarian character. For example, he can't benefit or harm a person except by Allah’s will and he does not want any material interest, social prestige, kingship or good reputation through spreading this message. All these are some of the greatest evidences that the Qur'an is God's words sent down to Prophet Mohammad , so look at the following proofs from the Qur'an:
The Prophet was ordered to declare his job to the people, which was to be a guide based on revelation. God says:
"Say (o Muhammad " I don't tell you that with me are the treasures of God, not (that) I know the Unseen; nor I tell you that I am an angel. I but follow what is revealed to me." Say: " Are the blind and the one who sees equal? Will you not then take thought?"Al-An'am 50
Say (O Mohammad " O mankind! Verily, I am sent to you all as the messenger of Allah- to Whom belongs the dominion of the heaven and the earth. No God deserves to be worshipped but Him (Allah). It is He Who gives life and causes death. So believe in God and His messenger , the prophet who can neither read nor write, who believe in God and His Words (heavenly books) and follow him so that you may be guided" Al-A'raf 158
Say (O Mohammad) "I possess no power over benefit or harm to myself except as God wills. If I had the knowledge of the unseen, I should have secured for myself an abundance of wealth, and no evil should have touched me. I am but a warner, and a bringer of glad tidings to people who believe." Al-A'raf 188
"Say (O Mohammad) O you mankind! If you are in doubt as to my religion (Islam), then (know that) I will never worship those whom you worship besides Allah. But I worship God Who causes you to die, and I am commanded to be one of the believers." Yunis 104
2- Qur'an ordered Mohammad to follow what was revealed to him God says:
"So to this (religion of Islam) then call people for and stand firm and straight by following what God ordained and by abstaining from forbidden deeds, as you are commanded and follow not their desires but say: " I believe in whatsoever God has sent down of the book (all the holy books) and I am commanded to do justice among you. Allah is our God and your God. For us, our deeds and for you, your deeds. There is no dispute between us and you. God will assemble us and to Him is the final return."-
The Qur'an warns the Prophet about the result in the event of his disobeying God’s orders. God says:
Say (O Mohammad) " Shall I take as a God any other than God the creator of the heavens and the earth? And it is He Who feeds but is not fed." Say: "Verily, I am commanded to be the first of those who submit themselves to Allah (as Muslims)." And be not you (Mohammad) of the polytheists (who have partner with Allah and disbelieve in the Oneness of Allah. Say: "I fear, if I disobey my Lord, the torment of a Mighty Day."-
The Qur'an guided Prophet Mohammad to keep close to his followers who were believers and keep himself patient with them. God says:
“And keep yourself (O Mohammad) patiently with those who call on their God(Allah) ( i.e. your companions who remember their God with glorification, praising in prayers, and other righteous deeds) morning and afternoon, seeking His face:( his rewards), and let not your eyes overlook them, desiring the pomp and glitter of life of the world; and obey not him whose heart We have made heedless of Our Remembrance, and who follows his own lusts and whose affair has been lost."
All these orders and guidelines for the Prophet that were repeated in the Qur'an are among the strongest proofs that the Qur'an is God's words.
Some other logical proofs that the Qur'an is God's words are its indication of some recent scientific discoveries. Humans write about their current beliefs and knowledge. Their writings could be correct or incorrect. We will never find any other book of the past without obsolete information compared to new discoveries in all fields. However, the Qur'an is completely different from other books. It is correct and true in all its contents although it has been centuries since it was written. This is a proof that it is the Creator’s words and He knows all the facts in their eternal and true state. God's knowledge and is never influenced or controlled by barriers of time, location or situation. If the Qur'an came from a human who had limited knowledge and insight, time would have made it irrelevant as occurs with all other human writings.
Qur'an miracles related to knowledge this world include:
Describing scientific facts before they were observed with vocabulary and expressions acceptable to common usage and knowledge, never contradicting confirmed discoveries. Some examples are the following:
" God is He Who raised the heavens without any pillars that you can see." Al-Ra'd 2
This verse is consistent with what humans used to see in the past - a big world in space built on its own, consisting of the sun, the moon and the stars without any posts or pillars. Modern-day humans will find an explanation of what he sees that proves that planets exist in endless space without physical attachments but there are unseen forces such as gravity that keep these planets in their fixed places.
"It is not for the sun to overtake the moon , nor does the night outstrip the day. They all (planets) float, each in an orbit." Yaseen 40
Human in the past used to see stars moving their positions in specific times, so they were not surprised with this verse. Also, modern researchers have understood this verse very well because there is no expression better than floating because planets are actually orbiting in space.
C-In the Qur'an, there is a verse about the night and the day which says:
" He brings the night as a cover over the day, seeking it rapidly"
This verse explains to the human the secret of the night coming after the day, but it has a terrific indication about the earth’s axial orbit around the sun which is the cause of what we perceive as night and day according to our latest knowledge. That was confirmed by the Russian spaceman Gagarin's observations when he orbited earth, as he reported seeing a rapid following of darkness and night on the earth’s surface because of its axial orbit around the sun.
There are many explanations of this kind in the Qur'an.
2- One of the Qur'anic miracles is what was stated about the tips of human fingers in God’s speech:
"Yes, We are able to put together in perfect order the tips of his fingers."
So why did God specify the tips of the fingers? Of all the humans that were and are born on earth, there are no two persons who have the same finger prints. This is a miraculous phenomenon that was discovered recently which nobody knew that at Prophet Mohammad's time or even ten centuries later, so it must be that he received revelation from God. There are hundreds of similar phenomena in the Quran. And as we continue to study the Qur'an, more of its endless miracles will be discovered.
Another proof that the Quran is true revelation is its prediction of then-future events:
1-The Qur'an told us that Abu-Lahab, the Prophet's uncle will enter hell, which means he will not believe in Islam and will die as a disbeliever. This man was alive when this verse was sent down. In spite of that, he did not believe in the Prophet's message or even claim that for defamation of the Qur'an’s truthfulness. God says:
(سَيَصْلَى نَاراً ذَاتَ لَهَبٍ) (المسد : 3 )•
"He will be burnt in a Fire of blazing flames"
B-The second proof is Qur'an is telling that the Romans were defeated in a far away place but they will defeat the Persians and win the battle, and this is exactly what occurred.
2- The Qur'an told about the nations of the past in a way that did not contradict the information of the Jews living closeby in AlMadinah. Also, the Qur'an responded to their false claims saying that Jesus was crucified and he was a God, son of a God and he was a magician. The Qura'n responded to the claim that prophet Solomon was a magician. The Qur'an told about previous prophets. The Jews used to listen to what was told about their prophet Moses and no one objected to what mentioned about him in the Qur'an, which proves that the Qur'an is true.
3- Another miracle of the Qur'an is that its meanings are consistent with each other, and its laws are encoded and support each other. If it was not from God, there would be differences and contradictions in meanings and laws. God says:
"Do they not then consider the Qur'an carefully? Had it been from other than God, they would surely have found therein many a contradiction."
4- God promised a guarantee that He will keep the Qur'an safe and protect it from replacement, misconstruction and changing. This is what we see today, as all Muslims have the same copy of the Qur'an. The Arabian Muslim reads the same copy that an Indian, Chinese, American, European or Persian Muslim reads.
5- The simplicity in reciting Qur'an even for non-Arabs.
To those who are looking for the truth, the effect of the Qur'anic influence on the Arabs was so great that, in spite of them being famous for their eloquence and rhetoric, they could not agree on any other language which compared to the Quran in nature or quality. The story of three Qurashi chiefs (Abu-Sufyan, Abu-Jahal and Al-Akhnas Bin-Shurayiq) is the best proof of that.
The story began when each one of them felt that he was attracted to the Qur'an. He wanted to listen so he went out secretly in the darkness of the night so no one can see him because everyone knew that they publicly objected to Prophet Mohammad's message. Every one of them went to Prophet Mohammad's home to listen to his reading while he was praying. Every one sat in a place where no one knew what the other was doing. They stayed up until just before dawn, and then they left and met on the way back. Each one of them knew what the two others did, so they blamed each other and said not to do it again that because if you were seen by some of you foolish men, they would suspect something. Then they went home. They repeated their act three times and after each time, they promised each other not to do it again. If the Qur'an was not miraculous, it would not have attracted its enemies to listen to it. Someone named Al-Akhnas began asking his two friends about their opinion of what they heard from Mohammad . Abu-Jahal said: “What I heard! Bani Abdmanaf competed with us in nobility - they fed people and we did so, they carried water for pilgrims and we did, they gave and we gave too, till we became equal. When they said there is a prophet from us and a revelation is revealed to him from heaven, we could not say something like that. I swear to God we will never believe in him or it!
When Muslim numbers began to increase, one of the most known rivals of the Islamic message, Utbah bin Rabe'a, tried to influence and convince the Prophet Mohammad to abandon his calling to the message of Islam. He presented an offer from the Quraish tribe chiefs to give him whatever he wants; money, kingship or women. The Prophet said to him, “have you finished, Aba Alwaleed?” He said, “yes”. Mohammad then said, “listen to me” and began reciting some verses from Qur'an. Utbah had no choice but to listen. He leaned on his hand behind his back listening. Then, the Prophet said to him “you listened to what I read and now it’s your choice”. When Utbah went to his friends, they said Utbah came with a different face from the one he went with. The effect of Qur'an on him was wonderful which was clear from his answer when he was asked, what news do you have? He said, what I have is that I heard speech (the Qur'an) I have never heard something like it. I swear it is not poetry, not magic or divination. Quraish people - obey me and trust me - leave this man and what he has. I swear that there will be great news of this speech that I heard. If Arabs get him, then others did the job (getting rid of him), and if he became a leader of importance among the Arabs, that is your kinship and honor and you will be the happiest people.
They said to Utbah, “we swear that he (Mohammad ) bewitched you with his tongue”. Utbah said, “This my opinion about him, so do what you want to do”.
The Qur'an is miraculous in content-related, structural, and rhetorical ways. It tells about God's names and characteristics, His angels, about the past and future by giving examples, as God says:
" And indeed, We have fully explained to mankind, in this Qur'an, every kind of similitude, but most mankind refuse to accept them and choose disbelief."
A truly miraculous aspect of the Qur'an is its complete and perfect laws, which guarantee a happy life for every man and woman and billions of people’s acceptance that it is from God who knows what is good for them anytime and anywhere. So, the Qur'an came with distinctive laws, convenient for every human because it fulfills their dreams. This is why people convert to Islam and believe in Mohammad as a prophet and messenger, and that the Qur'an is God's words revealed. There were more Arab and non-Arab Muslims after Mohammad death and their numbers are increasing because of the effect of the Qur'an on their lives. The Quran is a guide for people to worship only God- the creator, the All-Owner- and the disposer of all affairs- without a partner who sent messengers and holy books. God says:
" O mankind Verily, there has come to you the Messenger (Mohammad) with the truth from your God. So believe in him, it is better for you. But if you disbelieve, then certainly to Allah belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth. And Allah is Ever All-Knowing, All-Wise.
